For those acquainted with Spanish ballet, Jose Greco and his troupe will provide an evening of exciting, colorful entertainment. For Greco is a precision craftsman and an agile, graceful dancer as well. And his company is one of the best of the few performing Spanish dances in this country today.
Spanish dance draws warmth and vitality from a rich cultural background; the "Bolero" and "Seguidilla," in particular, are two which depict the temperment of Spanish myth and ceremony. Ballerina Nila Amparo is lithe and electrifying in "Bolero." On the humorous side, Teresa and Juanele Maya do the famous wife-husband fight in "Bulerias." The fiery "Zapateado", works up to such a dramatic ending that the crowd demands to see it all again.
After intermission, Rogelio Reguera gave an expert demonstration of Spanish guitar playing. But in his "Cante Jondo", much repartee went unappreciated since there was no translation of the Spanish given to the audience. For those who cannot figure out what the Spanish ballet is all about, the variety to the program alone may be enough to hold one's attention.
