Student Forgers Found Guilty, Draw Light Probation Sentences

Check forgers Thomas M. Bergin '54 and Murdock Whitney were placed on probation yesterday at the East Cambridge District Court by Judge Edward J. Dever.

Both men pleaded guilty after having made restitution of more than $1,000 on their checks.

Bergin, who has been suspended from the College, was sentenced to a three month probation period which ends on February 1, 1952. His associate, Whitney, has been returned to the Worcester Superior Court, where he has been placed on indefinite probation. His case has been placed on file at the East Cambridge Court, although further action may be taken in Worcester.

Judge Dever announced that although Bergin drew a three month probation sentence, it will probably be lifted if it prevents his return to college. Whitney flunked out of the College last year as a freshman.

The two men were arrested in a Massachusetts Avenue chain store, allegedly attempting to pass a bad check.
