Howard Hughes' newest involves police captain McQuigg (Robert Mitchum) trying to get criminal Scanlon (Robert Ryan) behind bars with the old gimmick--no evidence.
Working with an outfit whose business it is to get its flunkies as judges on the bench, Ryan does a good job of parading around in a beautiful tweed coat hitting his cohorts, slapping women, and getting his younger brother out of trouble. Mitchum is on the side of the goodies in this production and does a good job as the clean cut cop out to get his man.
Nightclub singer Lizabeth Scott is the same as ever. She serves the function of squealing to the cops, which in turn helps an over-eager young policeman to trap and shoot two of Ryan's gang, which in turn makes Ryan shoot the eager cop. This enables Mitchum to lock him up.
The movie is not original, but a few good lines and the acting of both Mitchum and Ryan help make the production entertaining.
Also on the bill is a jungle terror movie called "Bride of the Gorilla." If you like jungle movies in general, you'll like this one, especially since it has the additional charm of one Barbara Peyton strutting her hour upon the screen in primitive-type dresses which point up her figure considerably.
These two movies make a decent evening's entertainment provided you haven't anything better to do.
