LINING THEM UP

Poley's Stampeding Yardlings

In spite of Saturday's 3 to 2 loss to Phillips Exeter Academy, the Yardling soccer team seems on its way up. Coach Andrew "Poley" Guyda predicts "that if the team can start the way they finished against Exeter, they will have a pretty good chance against Dartmouth Friday. Unfortunately, the freshmen so far have shown a tendency to let the other team stampede them into describe their short passing game, and resorting to "hit and run" tactics.

The team is pretty strong offensively, but relatively green on defense Goalie Henry Pildner can say almost anything in the air, has plenty of courage, and boasts a fast, long boot. Adelbert Cranney and Dick Simmons, who substitute in the nets, are less experienced and about on a par. Marvin Weiss, brother of last year's All-American Charlie Weiss, and Mauricio Toro have added new life to the formerly weak fullback positions. Both players and have excellent control Substitutes Tim Janway and Bob Young are inexperienced, but Young is aggressive and can sometimes get off long boots.

Brazilian Leads Aggressive Halfbacks

Steve Szaras Covers the ground at right half and has proved a good man. Center halfback Alex Hanger from Brazil sparks the line and is fast, quite good in the air, and tackles well. Californian Charles Jobbins is an aggressive left half and passes well.

Guyda has two good right wings in Gordon Fair and Johnny Youmans. Fair is speedy, but still needs more bad control. Youmans is a "goal-getter"--a quality Guyda regards as necessary in a good wing. After watching Youmans play with the varsity Monday, varsity coach Bruce Munro thought he looked very promising. Bill Cowperthwaite at inside right has been a good team player and makes excellent passes. He is fast, but only for short sprints. Like other freshman center forwards. Dave Wise, although very aggressive, has the tendency to get sucked back into the play instead of staying upfield.

Fransioli Uses Both Feet

Inside left Mike Blumenfeld dribbles the ball too much so far, but will be all right if he can learn to play more of a team game. There's a good position player at left wing. Tom Fransioli. He has plenty of stamina, can shoot with either foot, but he must learn to shoot more for goals instead of merely crossing the ball. Reserve inside Roland Hok plays a fast tireless game, is a good dribbler, but his passes lack accuracy.

Guyda has a fair bench to draw upon. "Up and coming players," as he describes them, include halfbacks Dick Dexter and Bob Leary, and an aggressive fullback, Craig Jennings. He has a "good pupil" in James Pates, who is new to the game, and a promising halfback in Oliver Wadsworth, who has a good kick, but sometimes "fades" when about to tackle a man.
