LINING THEM UP

Soccer to 'Em

It'll be all or nothing for the Crimson booters this year, experts around the Business School Field are sagely commenting. With a veteran defense coupled with a rookie offense, Coach Bruce Munro may turn out a championship eleven, and then again he may have a complete flop. If the untried forward line pans out anywhere near as well as last year's Munro should have a pleasant season.

"You never can tell until after the first game," Munro states. "Players may react very differently in a game from what they do in practice. They have improved steadily, though, and I'm a lot more optimistic than I was when they first came out."

If condition means anything, Munro should be hopeful. He's had his men out since a week before college began with practices twice daily. As a result they're in good shape to meet Tufts tomorrow in Medford. "Condition counts more than skill in the early games," Munro adds.

Five Veterans

Goalie Dick Craven will captain this year's booters, with only four other first-string veterans coming back. The defense combination of Humphrey Doermann at left fullback and Charlie Ufford at right, left outside Berk Johnson and halfback Bob Harding are the only holdovers from last year's starting eleven.

Munro's team suffers from the loss through graduation of last year's captain and left inside Ted Wolf and all-American right inside Charlie Weiss. Vern Drehmel, last year's high scorer, cannot compete because he had rheumatic fever over the summer, and star outside Ben Goldstoin and defense stalwart Pants pantaleoni are both unable to play because of too much work. Halfback Latsi Berger is still out with a trick knee, but should be back in action again by the end of the week.

Sophomores Look Good

Even with these losses, Munro has a good roster of last year's reserves. Dana Getchell was the strongest of last year's bench and will move up to the first string left inside, with Pete Baker, another of last year's substitute lettermen, fighting it out with sophomore Johnny Beer for the right inside position. Juan Rodriguez, another sophomore, will probably alternate with Ed Seaga in the center forward slot. Win Knowlton, captain of the '53 Yardling team, who didn't come out last year, looks promising at right wing.

The forward line of Johnson, Getchell, Rodriguez or Seaga, Baker or Beer, and Knowlton has plenty of spirit and guts but does not have the skill of last year's, and is not expected to do as well as the veteran defense. This fall's games will probably be low scoring for both the Crimson and the opposition. Frank Davies will probably see a lot of action in the forward line as an experienced reserve, and sophomores Steve Joyce and Juan Vollenwilder have shown well.

Florin, Leonard Other Halves

Besides Harding at left half, Munro has chosen Bernard Florin for his starting center half and Larry Leonard for the right half. Both saw some action last year. Jim Callahan, Jack Whiting, Craig Zane, and Berger when he comes back, will be the reserves.

Behind the starting fullbacks, Doermann and Ufford, Munro has Bob Sobel at left fullback and Bill Gowan on the other fullback position. As a substitute for Captain Craven in the nets, Roger Taylor will probably see action.
