Even without the guidance of Jaakko Mikkola, who is in the hospital, the Crimson barriers took second in a four-way cross-country meet yesterday at Franklin Park. Harvard finished behind Rhode Island State, and ahead of Boston College and Holy Cross. Meanwhile the Crimson freshmen defeated the Rhode Island '55's in a dual meet.
Captain Dave Gregory led the field, and finished the four and one half mile course in 22:21, followed by Ram captain Ray Lister in 22:25. The next Crimson runners to finish were Dave Cairns, eighth in 23:38, Hubert Maguire, ninth, four seconds later, and Bruce Phillips tenth. Hal Gerry was twelfth and Emil San Soucie fourteenth. The last four are sophomores.
McCurdy Sube for Mikkola
Bill McCurdy, freshman coach, handled both squads in Mikkola's absence. The final scores were Rhode Island 23, Harvard 40, B.C. 82, and Holy Cross 98.
Dave Ingle, Crimson freshman captain, finished first in the three-and-one-quarter mile '55 meet, in 17:20, with Marsh Childs running number two, 24 seconds later. Bill Chrisman was fourth, Frank Nahigian sixth, and Warren Little seventh. The final score of the freshman meet was 20 to 35.
