Varsity Sextet Faces Bruin's Attack at Providence Today

Although its vacation tour is over, the hockey team continues its extended road trip tonight, when it meets a powerful Brown team at Providence, in the Crimson's Pentagonal League opener. This is the fifth straight game away for Cooney Weiland's men: the Crimson travels to Springfield and Williamstown over the weekend, before playing Northeastern in the Arena a week from tonight.

Brown, League champions last year, is strong; Warren "Git" Priestly, second high scorer in the League, centers the second line. Don Sennott, starting center, is a fast skater and a good shot. He works well with wings Tony Male and Bob Wheeler. Priestly, a fine stick-handler, teams with Frank DiBiase and Al Gubbins.

The Bruins began their League schedule Saturday, beating Yale, 4 to 1. Goalie Don Whiston excelled against the Elis, aided by the fine defensive work of Jake Murphy and John Gilbert. Whiston, who allowed only 2.9 goals per League game last year, will be Brown's game captain tonight. The Bruins have won four, lost two. They beat the Windsor Club, Northeastern twice, lost to B.C. and the New York A.C.

Brown coach Wecky Moulton stresses defensive play. The Bruin wings are fast enough to backcheck all the way, and cover their men closely. The defensemen set up a screen around the goalie, trying to control the puck.

A typical Brown attack pattern starts with a defenseman intercepting the puck near his own goal, carrying it up a short way to give the forwards a chance to break, then passing it quickly up to the center, who then stickhandles all the way to the opponents' goal.

This style of play differs from the Crimson offense in that Weiland believes that the man who gets the puck initially should stickhandle on his own as far as he can before passing. The lineup: HARVARD  BROWN Corning  g  Whiston Burke  ld  Gilbert Bliss  rd  Murphy Preston  lw  Wheeler Kittredge  c  Sennott Marshall  rw  Malo
