Soccer Team Opens Against Jumbos

Crimson Favored on Business School Field Despite Injuries to Goldstein, Pantaleoni

Bruce Munro's soccer team will stand a pretty fair chance in beat Tafts this afternoon, if the tape supply in the Dillon Field House medical room holds out. The Jumbe's invasion of the Business School field at 2:30 p.m. will start the season for both teams as well as being the opening gun in New England Intercollegiate Soccer League competition.

At the beginning of last week, Munro's forward line of Berk, Jim Johnson, Captain Ted Wolf, All-American Charlio Weiss, and Ben Goldstein was passing well and appeared set for a productive season.

The halfback lien showed depth with veterans Larry Leonard, "Pants" Pantatconi, and "Laisi" Berger backed by Kick Miller and sophomore Dana Getchell. The goal was scour under the care of Dick Craven and Don Harshman.

The only hole was at fullback. Since then 13 applicants have turned up for the two vacant slots, enabling Munro to come up with the lanky sophomore combination of Charlie Ufford and Ben Florin. The pair has been looking good in practice this week.

But elsewhere, aches, sprains, pulls, and bruises have temporarily knocked holes in the lineup and eliminated its depth. Goldstein and Pantaleoni are definitely out for two weeks while Weiss and Getchell will probably be available for limited service only.

Harding, Drehmel in Line-up

To ping the gaps, Munro will probably move Vern Drohmel, late-reporting veteran of last year's line, into Weiss' right inside position and will shift tape-en-inside position from his right halfback post to Goldstein's right wing slot.

Bob Harding, converted fullback applicant, will start at center half in place of Pantalconi, and will be flanked by Leonard and Miller.

"Although the team is not at full strength," Munro commented last night, "the team can win if it fights all the way." Thufts has probably improved over last year when they took a 4 to 1 drubbing from the Crimson.

Star Inside Returns

Returning will be their star inside Richelien Morris, who is rumored to have brought a "friend" who is equally good.

The probable lineup:

Craven, g; Ufford, rfb; Florin, lfb; Leonard, rhb; Harding, chb; Miller, lhb; Beger, or; Drehmel, ir; Wolf, c; Johnson, J., il; Johnson, B., ol.

After Tufts, the booters play Haverford, whom they did not meet last year. On October 14 the Crimson encounters Penn, another team which was not on the schedule in 1949.

connceticut, one of the strongest teams in the nation, is played on October 17, and Army, whom Harvard beat, 2 to 1, last year, is the opponent on the 21st. Other teams on this year's schedule which the Crimson also played in 1949 are Yale, Princeton, and M.I.T., who were defeated, and Dartmouth, Brown, and Amherst, who won last year.
