Thomas Whittemore, Honorary Keeper of Byzantine Coins and Seals and Honorary Research Fellow in Byzantine Art, died suddenly yesterday in Washington, D. C. Whittemore, a noted archaeologist, was also Director of the Byzantine Institute of Boston.
At the time of his death, Whittemore was on his way to an appointment with John Foster Dulles in the State Department Building. He collapsed and died in a corridor.
Whittemore was born in 1871 and was graduated from Tufts in 1894. He was a graduate student at Harvard from 1895 until 1898. He was appointed Keeper of Byzantine Coins at the Fogg Museum in 1933, and Research Fellow in Byzantine Art in 1938. In 1942 he became the honorary holder of both positions.
