Three 150 Crews Win; Yardling Boat Ties MIT

Four 150-pound crews almost made a clean sweep of their first regatta against M.I.T. Saturday afternoon on the Charles. Bert Haines' smooth varsity, junior varsity, and third varsity eights all defeated the Engineers by comfortable margins, but the freshmen rowed the Henley course to a dead heat.

Austic Flagg stroked the varsity 'fifties to a five-length victory over the M.I.T. first boat, never letting the stroke got over 34. After a relatively slow start, the Crimson oarsmen pulled a half length ahead when the stroke settled at a 32, and were never headed. The winning time for the mile and five-sixteenths course was 7:37, with M.I.T. covering it in 7:58.5.

The junior varsity win was even more decisive than the varsity victory. The Crimson Jayvees won by six lengths, and would have won by more if they had not stopped rowing about two lengths before they crossed the finish line. Stroke Jerry Wells kept the beat at 31 during the body of the race, understroking his opponents by one count all the way. Harvard's time was 7:41, M.I.T.'s 8:06.5.

If the freshman race had been over one stroke sooner, the Engineers would have won by four feet; if it had gone one stroke farther the Crimson would have won by the same margin. As it was, the two crews crossed the line bow to bow. M.I.T. held a slight lead through most of the race, but Harvard stroke Pete Bullard upped the count from 32 to 40 to bring his boat into a fast, smooth finish. The time was 7:54.5.
