'53 Net Team Downs Exeter

Trailling 4 to 0 at one point, the Yardling tennis team won two singles matches and swept the doubles Saturday for a well-earned win at Exeter.

The losers showed plenty of power, winning the first set of every singles match as they tried to keep alive an Exeter streak that had been going since 1946.

Art French and Paul Trinchieri kept the Yardlings in the match with the only singles victories of the day, and Trinchieri looked impressive in his debut as third man.

Charlie Ufford never got started against Clyde Barker and the ranking New England Junior player beat him in his debut sets.

But when Ufford teamed with French against Exeter's Barker-Graven combination it was a different story; the freshmen won in three sets to lead the first doubles blanking of the Red and Gray that Exeter Coach Percy Rogers could remember.

Dave Watts played well in his first match for the Crimson as he and Berk Johnson gave the freshmen their only straight-set victory. Meanwhile, the 'B' team beat the Exeter Jayvees, 5 to 4.
