A powerful and fast-finishing Boston University freshman crew defeated the Yardling eight on the Charles Saturday by half a length. M.I.T. was third, two lengths behind the Crimson.

Rowing against a heavy headwind that churned the Basin, all three crows turned in slow times for the mile and three-quarter course. BU's winning time, 10:26.3, was three seconds faster than the BU varsity time. The Crimson was clocked at 10:30.0, and M.I.T. at 10:47.0.

"We just ran out of gas," Crimson coach Harvey Love commented after his crew's first race. BU, a quarter length behind at the start, slowly caught up and stayed virtually even during the body of the race until the final sprint, when it pulled away from the Crimson, which had started chopping water. The extra conditioning and racing experience that BU had on its Southern trip made the difference.
