Sextet Upsets BC, 9-8; Chase Stars

It was the greatest hockey game since the war. The varsity sextet stunned BC with five goals in the first period, maintained that margin until midway through the final stanza and then fought off the frantic counterattack of the Eagles, a drive which netted four goals. And the final score was Harvard 9, Boston College 8.

The pace of the game was so great at the end that the teams failed to hear the final buzzer until it rang for twenty seconds. When they did stop, the BC players whacked their sticks down on the ice with disappointment, and the Crimson squad mobbed goalie Johnny Chase, who played clearly the finest game of his career in the nets.

But everyone was outstanding. The defensemen, Jack Carman, Dusty Burke, John Donelan, and Bill Bliss checked like men possessed. The three lines put on their finest passing display of the season, and combined it with accurate shooting and careful backchecking. They were better than Boston College for forty-five of the sixty minutes.

All of which act up the final fifteen minutes. Inspired by a peptalk which echoed insults into the Arena hallway, the BC team gave up all regard for physical safety in order to score. At 14:16 Harrington made it 9 to 5 and half a minute later came another score while Chase was trying to free his stick, which was stuck in the nets behind the cage.

The heat of the play steadily increased as Sullivan made it 9-7 at 16:14 and the Arena went berserk when Jack Carman was put off at 18:27 for high sticking and BC pulled its goalie in favor of a sixth skater.

A screen shot made it 9 to 8 at 19:41 and as the crowd howled Chase made five fantastic saves before time ran out.

Bob DiBlasio suffered the only injury of the night, a cut over the eye from an erring stick.
