"The Bicycle Thief" and "Devil in the Flesh" are tied as the best foreign films of 1949, according to the results of a poll released last night by Ivy Films. "Fallen Idol" was cited as the best English speaking film, and "The Heiress" as the best American film the opinion of its 160 members.
Ralph Richardson carried off double honors in the poll. He was judged the best leading actor in "Fallen Idol," and the best supporting actor in "The Heiress." Olivia deHavilland, also for her performance in "The Heiress," won first place in the poll's competition for the best leading actress. The best supporting actress was Mercedes McCambridge named for her role in "All the King's Men."
For his work in "Fallen Idol," Carrol Reed received the Poll's award for the best director.
