Five sophomores will wrestle on Coach Bob Pickett's first Harvard team as the Crimson opens its mat season at M.I.T. today. The varsity and freshman matches--to be held simultaneously--begin at 2 p.m. in Rockwell Cage, located behind the armory at Vassar Street and Massachusetts Avenue.
Despite the preponderance of second-year men, the appears to be quite a strong squad, with its main weakness coming through the light-heavyweight divisions. Johnny Lee, the lightweight at 123, and Humphrey Heldtmann, the heavyweight, are--next to Captain Dave Smith--probably the best wrestlers Pickett has, Heldmann, a defensive guard on the football team, was not eligible to wrestle last winter.
The other sophomores are Bud Adams, Icko Iben, and Joe Hubbard. Iben, too, is a very experienced man. Ted Anderson and Dave Waring, although they are upperclassmen, do not have a great deal of varsity wrestling behind them. Anderson, at 157, will come up against Tech's captain.
Smith has moved down one weight class and may be headed for his best season yet. No practice injuries have cropped up to enervate Crimson entries.
Meanwhile at Tech, Roy Merrit--in his first year as varsity coach--finds himself with a fairly inexperienced team. Top men besides Callahan are Sinclair Buckstaff and Bart Conant. In their first test of the season, the M.I.T. wrestlers lost to Springfield, 18 t 16, in the final match.
According to freshman coach Howie Houston, the man to watch in his lineup is Chick Chandler, who goes at 167. Chandler placed high in a recent New England Open tourney; Oakleigh Thorne, at 123, is also expected to show well.
