William F. Dennis of New York City and Weld Hall was elected freshman basketball captain after the team's 88 in 52 victory over Brown Wednesday.
Dennis, a six foot one inch guard, played at Andrew Jackson High School in Queens where he made the All-Queens basketball team and received honorable mention for the All-Metropolitan squad. In his senior year he scored 230 points in 14 league games, breaking the record which another Andrew Jackson player, Bob Couay, had set four years before.
Dennis, whose father graduated from the College in 1928 and the Business School in 1930, is a spectacular ball-handler who fools opponents by dribbling behind his back and shooting while going away from the basket. Freshman coach Floyd Wilson calls him, "a very fine leader with a wonderful attitude."
The new freshmen captain scored 18 points in the team's opening game against M.I.T., and 14 in the Brown rout. His most effective short is a one-hand push from the corner.
