Squares Open Display Battle

Harvard, Central Vie In Annual Yule War

Christmas season is here, and with it the annual battle for business between Central and Harvard Squares.

This year, both sections are trying to outdo the other with gala displays. Last week, the Cambridge Light Company dug up the sidewalk in front of the Coop to put in permanent installations for electric displays, and yesterday, workmen finished stringing garlands and colored lights between every pole from Harvard to Quincy and Brattle Squares.

Also small trees will be placed on over Massachusetts Transit Authority pole, and the the decorations will be lit from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Large trees set up by the city in Brattle, Harvard, and Quincy Squares and in front of the Harvard Square information booth will complete the display.

But Central Square is also stringing lights and garlands. And in addition, there will be a life size Santa Claus with sleigh and three reindeer in the square, and a "Marry Christmas sign flanked by two candle lit trees in near by Lafayette Square.

The City appropriates money to each section every year. Last year Harvard Square applied for its funds too late and consequently, Central Square outdid its rival.
