Blaze in Dudley Quickly Nipped

An unexplained fire which broke out in a third-floor Dudley room about 9 p.m. last night brought Cambridge Fire Chief John F. Collins and three engine companies, but caused only minor damage before it was extinguished.

Thomas W. Hoya '53 was passing Dudley 35 when he noticed smoke curling under the door. He entered the unlocked room, found it empty, but noticed smoke coming out of a small sofa. When hastily-called dormmates turned an extinguisher on the sofa, it burst into flames.

The fire companies answered the subsequent alarm quickly, and put out the blaze before it could spread to adjoining rooms. Though the sofa was completely destroyed, and some clothing damaged, Eugene R. Hurley, Jr. '53, an occupant of the room, estimated damage at less than $25.
