With the freshmen running Princeton single-wing plays, the varsity football team devoted most of yesterday's practice to sharpening its defense in preparation for Saturday's game.

Coach Lloyd Jordan experimented with various defensive alignments, although the personnel remained the same. The first defensive platoon succeeded in limiting the freshmen to short gains with one or two exceptions.

During the scrimmage Hank Rate and George Emmons were the ends; Bob Stargel and John Nichols played the tackles; Dick Heidtmann and Bill Roseman worked at the guards. The line-backers were Phil Isenberg and Buddy Lemay; Bill Healey, and Dave Warden played halfbacks and Dick Duback was the safety man.

When the first offensive unit took over against dummies, Carroll Lowenstein ran at tailback and Dave Warden took over for Jerry Blitz at wingback. Lemay was at center in place of the injured Paul O'Brien, while Rate was the right end.

After practice, Jordan said that substitute center Bainy Frothingham, hurt in the Holy Cross game, would definitely not play Saturday. O'Brien saw action with the second team during yesterday's contact drill and will be able to play.
