Lamont's fine system may go on a 50 cent per hour progressive basis, if students approve, Philip J. McNiff, head librarian of Lamont, said yesterday.
The new system which would charge 50 cents for each additional hour a book is overdue, would cut down considerably on books which are kept out all day, McNiff commented. He added, however, that the present fine of 75 cents is working as well as it ever has, and that the number of overdue books is now under 5 percent.
The system of progressive fining is employed in many colleges throughout the country, as well as in the Business School library.
Although already working at a "close to reading period pitch," McNiff remarked that Lamont can take care of the present influx because it now has the largest supply of boks that the College has had for the last ten years.
