William L. Langer '15, Coolidge Professor of History, has been summoned to Washington to resume his duties with the Intelligence Service, the CRIMSON learned last night. Langer will deliver his last lecture in History 132 this morning and will leave Cambridge during the weekend.
Sidney B. Fay '96, professor of History Emeritus, will come out of retirement to replace Langer in his undergraduate course and graduate seminar on diplomatic history.
Langer first went to Washington in 1940 as Coordinator of Information. When the Office of Strategic Services was subsequently established, he became one of its directors. In 1945 he was appointed Assistant Secretary of State and aided in organizing the intelligence department of the State Department. He is the first full professor to leave the University because of the international crisis.
