Yale Mixed Speed, Deception In Rout of Sluggish Bruins

It may or may not be significant, but Brown's varsity football squad reportedly showed better in a pre-season scrimmage with Boston University than Harvard did in its practice skirmish with the Terriers a week ago. And Saturday afternoon in in New Haven a smooth-running Yale eleven completely outclassed the Bruins by a 36 to 12 count.

Slow-Moving Line

Pre-season prediction had it that Zitrides would field a light, fast team this year, but the squad, particularly the linemen looked heavy and sluggish in the opener, in comparison with the Eli speedsters. The only experienced Bruin back, reliable Walt Pastuzak, tried vainly all afternoon to build up a respectable amount of yardage by sending fast halfbacks Jim Martland and Bob Lenker over tackle on quick-opening plays. Around end Brown went nowhere, and Pastuzak was able to complete only six out of 19 of his flat, hard passes against an alert Eli secondary.

The Yale linemen, strong on the flanks, consistently outcharged their heavier opponents (the average weight of the Yale line is 187 the Brown line, 201). Defensively, all the Bruin strength lay in the right side of the line. Guard John Chernak, great tackle, team captain Lloyd Hill, and 220-pound end Frank Powers held up so well that Pastazuk, throwing passes, kept all his backfield protection to his left. He was seldom harried from the unprotected right side.

Eli Backs Good

With Eli wingback Jerry Conway feinting inexperienced linebackers out of position, Stu Tisdale constantly fed Ed Senay on a series of fast-breaking plays over tackle and around end. Before a third period leg injury, the swift Senay ran up 170 yards in 22 attempts, and scored twice for the Blue.

From smooth-working offense to strong line-backing on defense (Bob Parcells and Louis Polk were outstanding) the Elis showed an amazing improvement in one week's time.
