Philadclphia's Whiz Kids won the National League pennant yesterday by turning back the Brooklyn Dodgers, 4 to 1, in a 10-inning thriller at Ebbetts Field. Outfielder Dick Sisler broke up the contest with a three-run homer in the top of the tenth.
Pitcher Robin Roberts set the Brooks down in five hits and turned in a masterful job of clutch pitching in the ninth when he stopped the Dogers without a run after loading the bases. Earlier in the inning, he was aided by a great throw by centerfield Richie Asbhurn who cut down Cal Abrams at the plate, as the latter attempted to score the game-winning run from second on Duke Snider's single.
Don Newcombe, the Brooklyn pitcher, matched Roberts until the fatal tenth when he allowed singles by Roberts and Waitkns. These, followed by Ashburn's unsuccessful sacrifice, set the stage for Sisler's winning blow.
