Howie Reed's 160 feet, 9 1/4 inch victory in the hammer throw provided one of the biggest upsets at the IC4-A track and field championships held Friday and Saturday in New York. Four Crimson entries managed to pile up 12 points and thereby capture seventh place against some of the toughest college competition in the country.

In winning his event, Reed moved up from the last qualifying spot. He had only been able to toss the hammer 153 feet, 8 1/4 inches on Friday.

Michigan State took first, overpowering defending champion Yale by 44 to 30 1/2 points. NYU, Seton Hall, Cornell, Penn State, and Harvard followed in that order. Twenty-five teams scored out of the 46 which entered the meet.

Two thirds were registered for the Crimson when Charlie Keith heaved the javelin 178 feet, 2 inches, and John Thorndyke threw the hammer 159 feet. 5 1/4 inches to edge out Dartmouth ace James Burnham by 2 3/4 inches.

Geoff Tootell, team captain for next year, threw the discus 138 feet, 11 1/2 inches to capture fifth. He qualified in the shot on Friday with a put of 49 feet. 1 3/4 inches, but failed to place the following day. Hammer thrower Bob Forsyth was the only Crimson entry who failed to qualify or place in the meet.
