Some Freshmen Slobs, Others Real Gentlemen According to Union Gals

Waitresses Say Most Yardlings Waste too Much Food, Are Sometimes too 'Darn Eager'

"They just think we're cheap waitresses; you know, one night girls," the servers at the Union complain when appraising the Harvard freshmen.

Whether they are right or wrong, the Union gals haven very definite ideas about the %2s who stream by the long counters meal after meal, day after day.

The servers work in two shifts the full time crew coming on at 6:45 a,m, and staying till 3 p.m. and the three hour gals just coming in for dinner.

The main difference between the two groups is that those who are on at night seem to have more to do with the freshmen than the other group. They are, for the most part high school girls, while these on earlier are older.

"Oh no, they don't first at all," most of the full time help reports. Many of the three-hour gals, on the other hand, describe the Yardlings as "darn eager."

With feminine intuition, however, some of the girls often spot this eagerness as "just a way to got more meat."

"If you're stuck with the squash or turnips," complained one gal, "You may not get a smile the whole evening."

One prevalent sentiment is that most freshmen seem to feel superior to the girls on hte other side of hte counter. This the servers resent more than anything else.

"We feel," they say, "that we are due more respect than some of them (the freshmen) pay us."

"After all," they add, "we don't feel that we are cheap waitresses, and we don't thing anyone should judge us as cheap just because we're behind a counter."

"Some of them think that we're all just dying to have a date with them," one girl added.

Many of the girls do see freshmen at nights, however, and some are even "going steady."

Opinion on students manners seemed to be somewhat mixed. The majority of the girls agreed that most of the freshmen were well versed in their manners. One irate fiftyish maiden bitterly attacked the '52s, claiming that "they're all messy slobs, and I'd hate to be their mothers."

"Ninety-five percent of 'em are very good dressers and exceptionally neat in appearance." This statement was made by one girl, and was ascribed to by the majority.

Most agreed that the freshmen wasted too much food, ate too slowly, and left too much on the tables.

The girls, who think highly of most of the Union food, thought that too many boys, especially the "High brow" ones, "panned the food too much."

Yet "they" eat an awful lot, it was agreed. Their favorite types of food are meat, which they can't get enough of, fruit and fruit juice.

One woman expressed concern about student drinking orgies in the union. "They come in here for breakfast," she said, "drink four glasses of milk, six of juice, and then mix in a couple of cups of coffee."

"Boy do they hit that tomato juice when they've got a head on," a shrewd young thing observed.
