Winthrop Nine Tops Kirkland, 6-3

The usual torrent of intramural reports was reduced to a dribble last night because only two contests could be run off between the afternoon showers. The Winthrop baseball team kept dry enough to defeat Kirkland, 6 to 2, while Eliot beat Leverett, 9 to 5, in softball.

Mastodon softball power, operating behind the roundhouse righthand slants of Bill Johnson, crashed the Bunny defenses in the fourth inning to overcome an early 4-0 deficit. From there on, it was the old story of Eliot power, as the team raised its two-run scoring total to 39 runs.

Puritan Mel Zurier and Deacon Ed Smith turned in smooth pitching jobs, Zurier allowing three hits and Smith four. But the Winthrop players hit hard when they hit, and they made only three errors to the losers' five'.
