Rhode Island State's track team proved that runners are more valuable than weightmen Saturday in the Stadium when it relied on depth in the springs and distances to beat the Crimson, 76 2/3 to 63 1/2.
With Geoff Tootell, son of Rhode Island Coach Fred Tootell, winning the shot and discus, Jaakko Mikkola's weightmen kept the varsity with striking distance of the Rams up until the 220, next to last event on the program. But Rhode Island swept this event and broke off chances for a Harvard win.
Tootell, McCormick Win Twice
Tootell and Pat McCormick, who had no trouble taking both hurdle events, were double winners for the Crimson, which grabbed eight first to seven for the Rams. One event was split.
