The golf team, with three days of practice, travels south tomorrow to meet four colleges that have been on the greens since the middle of February.

North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Virginia, and Georgetown have some of the best golf squads in the south, and three of them beat the varsity easily last year. The other team was Georgetown, which Harvard didn't play.

But manager Jack Denton still has high hopes for the team. The varsity has gained strength since last season, and Denton expects them to beat Virginia Tech and Virginia, and perhaps Georgetown. As for North Carolina, they'll be "pretty mean."

First-Edition Team

Coach Bill Barclay is sending a first-edition team down on the vacation swing, two weeks before he chooses the regular team from 30 candidates. He chose this squad from returning lettermen and from the best players in a competition last fall.

It includes Bill Rickenbacker, captain and top man; Hugh Nawn, Sam Seager, Dick O'Keefe, Crawford Hubbell, Herb Mee, Bob Matson, and Denton. All of them will leave by car tomorrow, stopping off for practice in Pinehurst, North Carolina, at America's best links. Barclay, who is a pro at Salem Country Club, won't go along.

Their first meet is against North Carolina on Tuesday. The men from Chapel Hill shut out Harvard last year, 27 to 0, and still claim as their number one man Harrie Ward, winner of the North-South open tournament.

Virginia Tech Next

Then comes Virginia Tech on Wednesday and Virginia on Thursday. The engineers beat the varsity last year, 18 1/2 to 2 1/2, and Virginia also won, 16 to 5. With its top three men graduated, Virginia will be the easiest team to beat.

The final match is with Georgetown, and that's the one the varsity is looking forward to.
