Brooks Predicts N.E. Snow's End With Next Thaw

One good thaw will probably force skiers 150 miles north for the rest of the season, Charles F. Brooks '11, director of the Blue Hills Observatory, predicted yesterday.

Brooks said that Cambridge can expect only three more inches of snow this year, and upper New Hampshire less than one foot. He based his figures on records of past years.

A heavy thaw, meanwhile, will melt off all the present snow, Brooks said. Last year, the final 16 inches disappeared from the Blue Hills in two days of sunshine.

Freak weather may change everything. Brooks cited the one storm a few years ago that covered New Hampshire with 30 inches of powder in the middle of May.
