Morrison Appears To Defend Novel

James M. Cain's novel "Serenade," on trial for obscenity in Suffolk Superior Court, got a helping hand last week from Theodore Morrison '23, lecturer in English.

Morrison testified that he saw no reason for the book to be censored." The defense had called him to the stand to speak as an expert witness.

"I personally feel that Cain isn't top-flight writer." Morrison said, "but his book falls within the bounds of social toleration. It deals with some important and serious themes even though the melodramatic writing detracts from its importance.
