Crew Quits Tank for Charles

Unless winter decided to show up again, Coach Tom Bolles will launch the varsity crew onto the chilly waters of the Charles this afternoon, in one of the earliest starts to a rowing season that this area has ever seen. Last year the river remained frozen until March 17.

The early thaw has caught even Bolles unprepared, since the crew has been in training for less than two weeks in the Newell tanks. The coach is still in the early stages of experimentation with combinations to fill three gaps in his 1948 boat. However, he has a strong nucleus in five returning veterans of his near-Olympic crew last year: stroke Bill Carwen, Captain Frank Strong, Ted Reynolds, Don Felt, and Mike Scully are all on hand. Several contenders from the Jayvees are in the running for the empty slides.

There are also several openings in the managerial field, according to Varsity Manager Charles Morgan, who last night offered a last chance for sophomores to enter the spring competition.
