Fighting '52 Five Defeats Newman

It was close for two and a quarter periods in the Freshman-Newman Prep basketball game last night. Then someone, maybe Coach Lloyd Harper, pushed the crucial button and the Crimson rolled to a 63-46 victory.

Newman presented an imposing array of height and muscle in the Indoor Athletic Building, but the freshmen coped with their opponent's physical advantages by using a tight defense and an agile, speedy offense. Harper has put special emphasis on his team's defensive play in the last two practices and evidently his players have learned their lessons well.

Once again Bill Hickey, Bill Borah, John Stevenson, Jim Downey, and Jerry Murphy started for the '52 squad, but before the evening's activities ended Harper employed at least four different combinations. Every one of them clicked.

Until the fourth minute of the third quarter Newman gave Harvard ample competition. After the first period the Crimson led by only one point, 11-10.
