The taxi moter showed $4.15, but Robert J. Schafer, program director of the School of Education, said it wasn't so--so emphatically, in fact, that Chicago police arrested him Wednesday night.
Free on bond yesterday, Schafer explained that it cost him only $2 to go to the meeting from his hotel. But the return fare over the same route amounted to $2.15 more, he said.
The cab driver said Schafer stopped in a tavern on the way back and made him wait. While admitting that he had indeed stopped in a tavern, Schafer denied that he made the cabbie wait.
Schafer was released on $2 bend and appeared in court yesterday but the case was continued until today so that the arresting officer could testify.
