President Truman will not offer the Atomic Energy Commission chairmanship to President Conant, the CRIMSON learned last night from a reliable Washington source. The nation's press had labeled Conant as a possible successor to David 1d Lillenthal.
Conant was not offered the post, according to the source, because he had been "definitely offered the A.E.C. chairmanship in 1946, prior to Lilienthal's nomination" and had refused. President Truman does not like to be turned down and it is unlikely that he will offer the post of Conant again."
Truman's press secretary, Charles G. Ross, when confronted with the statement on President Conant gave the CRIMSON last night an unqualified "no comment."
Lilienthal, who resigned on November 23, will leave office on December 31. Truman has not yet named his successor.
