The Jumbos never had a chance. For three periods at the Arena last night, the varsity hockey team hardly extended itself, yet it outclassed Tufts every foot of the way. In the end Harvard skated off with a 9 to 12 triumph its third win in three starts.
Unfortunately the price was second-line center Lew Preston who will probably be unavailable for tonight's important game against strong Brown in Providence. The big forward pulled a leg muscle in the second period, and doctors said afterwards they thought Preston would have to keep on the ice for the next few days.
Last night's Tufts game was no exhibition of good hockey, largely because the men from Medford wouldn't have it that way. The Crimson scored most of its goals on easy break-through with the forwards beating the goalies on solo shots. Four of the Crimson scores were unassisted, while two more came on long passes from the defensemen to forwards.
It took just 18 seconds of the first period for Harvard to score its first goal. Captain Myles Huntington set the pattern for the rest of the game by beating Tufts goalie Miles Uhrig to a pass from defenseman Jack Carman in deep Harvard zone.
The remainder of the period was slower. Defenseman Algie Allen and wing Bill Garrity repeated the process of the Carman-to-Huntington goal at 7:59, but at 15:21 a Tufts pass play beat Phil Clark in the Crimson goal. Clark was playing in place of John Chase, who was resting a broken finger from the BU game.
Crimson Rallies
In the second period, the Crimson really warmed up and banged in six straight goals before the Jumbos squeezed in their second and final tally. The Harvard scorers were Preston, Garrity, Carman, Huntington, Allen, and Doug Anderson.
The final period saw more roughing more checks, and more spills, but offensive play was still sloppy. Harvard's Dave Abbot scored the only goal, unassisted at 2:05.
After the game Coach John Chase said he will send Hal Marshal to right wing on the second line and put Bill Garrity at center in order to fill in for Preston against, Brown tonight. Johnny Chase will definitely start at goal.
