Winthrop, Kirkland Favored In House Grid Games Today

House football goes into its second round of games at 3:10 p.m. today on Soldiers Field, Winthrop, last week winner over defending champion Kirkland, meets Leverett, while unbeaten Dudley takes on the Deacons.

The Puritans will be rated a heavy favorite over the Leverett team, which was trounced by Eliot in its opener. Winthrop's hefty forward wall kept Kirkland from scoring, and is expected to wear down the small Leverett frontier. The Puritans didn't show much of an aerial display against Kirkland but it has a hard-driving backfield paced by Frank Hernberg.

Leverett was able to move the ball against the Eliots, but its line couldn't keep the Elephant offense in check. The Bunnies' fine passing attack may pull off an upset, but it still looks like number two for the Puritans.

Dudley didn't have much trouble with Dunster, but Kirkland may mess up its clean slate this afternoon. The Commuters have a polished T attack sparked by speedy Dave Gilbert, but Dudley was never really tested by an under-manned Funster squad.

Though Kirkland lost its first game, it turned in a very creditable performance against Winthrop. The Deacons were able to roll up considerable yardage through the rugged Puritan defense, and its own line yielded only one touchdown.
