The oft-heard notion that coaches spend "sleepless nights" when they have worries is quite pertinent this week in the case of the varsity soccer team; and Coach Druce Munro hopes his sleepless nights will bring about a Crimson triumph when the team takes on Army at noon today on the Business School Field.
When the Crimson opened its soccer season with a 4 to 1 victory over Tufts two Saturdays age, it looked as if Harvard was surely on its way to another good soccer year. But since then, the Crimson has bowed successively to Cornell and Amherst, primarily because there just wasn't any scoring punch.
On the Level
Coach Munro says he really spent a sleepless night: it was Wednesday, after his varsity had been shut out, 2 to 0 by Amherst. "Tossing about," he says, "I dreamed up one or two radical ideas."
In the first place Munro may move standout fullback Rick Drake all the way up to center forward--to get one of his best players into the scorer's position. And secondly the coach may switch lineman Charlie Weiss to halfback--to give the forwards a better feed-man behind them.
Of course Munro still has time to change his mind in favor of a more conventional lineup. But no matter what he decides, he will have to provide a better scoring punch against the rough, well-conditioned Cadets.
In the matter of workouts this week, Munro fed his charges a big dose of conditiong Thursday when the squad spent most of the afternoon in a concentrated soccer "keep away." Yesterday, the team returned to scrimmaging.
The probable Crimson lineup:
Batchelder, g; Scully, lfb; Harrop, rfb; Miller, lhb; Panteleioni, chb; Weiss, rhb; Johnson, ol; Spivak, il; Drake or Goldstein, cf; Dremmel, ir; Goldstein, cr.
