27 Years of No Avail Plans Fight Commencement Rains

University officials held their breaths for the 27th year in a row this week, as they thought about the weather and Commencement Day--two items that have to fit together nicely.

Since the first outdoor Commencement in 1922 things have gone well for the planners of the big day. It has never rained on Thursday of Commencement Week, although Class Day and Alumni festivities have been dampened year after year with annoying regularity.

It may be locking the barn door that keeps the rain away. Plans have always been worked out to the smallest detail for the eventuality of showers, Sanders Theater prepared, and rain tickets printed. And all--for 27 years--to no avail.
