Houses Admit 831 New Men

3 Men in 5 Win Coveted Places

Five hundred and seventy-eight students face the prospect of remaining Houseless next fall unless last-minute vacancies arise, Associate Dean Watson declared yesterday. Sixty percent, or 831 of the 1409 applications weighed by the College, were accepted.

Men not admitted will have to be satisfied with residence in Apley, Claverly, Dudley, Little, Grays, or Wigglesworth Halls, and will constitute a waiting list for future House vacancies.

Top priority was given to prospective 1949 graduates, Watson stated, and, in addition, all Seniors who applied for House rooms were offered assignments. Most of '50 was placed in the assignment, and "it is hoped that most of these not accepted now can be placed before September as vacancies occur."

House Privileges Extended

Students not admitted can find some consolation, however, in an announcement that they will be assigned to one of the Houses for non-resident privileges, including use of dining hall and library facilities, and participation in athletic and social events. Just how this will be arranged has not been decided as yet, Watson said, but men will receive notification of non-resident membership by Fall Term registration.

Procedure for summer storage of clothing and furniture was also outlined by Watson, who ordered removal of all desired property from Yard dormitories by 5 o'clock on May 29. All students wishing to leave effects in Cambridge over the summer should report to Grays 40 for a storage card and specific instructions. Men admitted to Houses will not be permitted to store their belongings in their new rooms. He emphasized that any storage of furniture is at the owners' risk.
