Army Gets Leet For TNT Tests

Underground Explosions

L. Don Leet, professor of Geology, will spend his summer supervising explosions involving as much as 320,000 pounds of TNT, in a program sponsored by the Army to learn what underground structures can best resist disintegration.

The five months long experiments, which begin June 1, will take place in Utah and Colorado. Seismologist Leet will take charge of instruments recording the effects of explosives on various types of underground tunnels and shelters.

No atomic bombs will be used in the tests but the information obtained "will be useful if underground industrial plants should become necessary," Lt. Gen. R. A. Wheeler of the Engineer Corps, who heads the project, said last night.
