To the probable annoyance of Arthur Valpey, 25 candidates for the Varsity soccer team next fall held a cheerful and disorganized scrimmage yesterday afternoon on the field next to the enclosed football practice area. Somewhat hampered by short wind and an inability to stand up, the booters spend considerable time lofting wild kicks over the fence into Valpey's spinning fullback formations.
Although the informal practice started last Monday when 13 men turned up, yesterday's two hour imbroglio began the first full team participations of the Spring. Six veterans of the 1947 Varsity battles appeared plus 13 Freshmen and several Jayvees, while managers expected coaches to show up later in the week.
Buzz Sawhill, Jayvee coach last fall, is tentatively scheduled to guide the soccer team's drills with the assistance of 1947 captain Hunt Mavor. Next fall's captain, Phil Potter, injured his lung while playing in New York this winter and may not be able to participate actively until September.
