Godin's 6-Hitter in Opener Checks Johns Hopkins, 7-1

Kenary Steals 3 Bases, Scores Pair of Runs

BALTIMORE, March 29--Harvard's southpaw, Ira Godin, held Johns Hopkins to six hits and struck out 11 batsmen today as the Jays opened their 1948 season by dropping a 7 to 1 decision. It was also the Crimson's opener. Following is the play-by-play account of the game, which was played under cold, windy weather conditions.

FIRST INNING

Harvard--Gannon scratched a single to right and took second on a wild pitch. Caulfield grounded to short, Gannon taking third. Kenary struck out. Coulson walked. Mannino walked, leading the bases. Sullivan grounded to short, forcing Mannino at second. No runs.

Hopkins--Koerber grounded to Coppinger. Schlerf reached first on a passed ball but was thrown out at second by Durant. Doyle reached first on a wild throw by Mannino. English fouled out to Coppinger. No runs.

SECOND INNING

Harvard--Coppinger walked. Durant popped to the first baseman. Godin hit into a double play, Schlerf to Loy to English. No runs.

Hopkins--Baake singled to left. Kinling forced Baake at second. Loy popped to Coulson. Kinling stole second and scored on Weiner's single to left. Carrico struck out. One run.

THIRD INNING

Harvard--Gannon walked. Caulfield singled to right but Gannon was thrown out trying to take third, Caulfield reaching second. Kenary reached first on an error, Caulfield scoring. Kenary stole second, and scored on Coulson's single to center. Mannino walked. Sullivan flied deep to Baake. Coppinger flied to left. Two runs.

Hopkins--Koerber popped to Coulson. Schlerf struck out. Doyle singled to left. English grounded to Coulson. No runs.

FOURTH INNING

Harvard--Durant walked and took second on an error. Godin grounded out, Gannon singled to right, scoring Durant. Gannon stole second. Caulfield walked. Kenary singled, scoring Gannon, but Caulfield was forced at second. Coulson grounded out. Two runs.
