Everything went according to pre-game expectations yesterday afternoon on the Soldiers Field diamonds as the Jayvees rolled to their fifth straight win (1-0 over Newton) while the Freshmen were bowing 10-5 to Holy Cross. It was the Yardlings' third loss of the campaign.
Roger Davis hurled the Jayvees to their victory. The game's only run came in the last of the ninth when Fred Glimp got on through an error, went to second on a passed ball, took third on Steve Howe's bunt single, and scored on Gordon Ellis's second hit of the game, a single to right. Davis fanned 12 and issued only one walk in blanking the visitors.
Emmons gave up five earned runs, but ten Crimson misplays paved the way to five more runs. The Crusaders had three-run innings in the first and third and added four more in the later stages. The Freshmen's big inning was the eighth when they rallied for three tallies after nothing single runs in the sixth and seventh.
The Freshmen, still in quest of their second win, trek to Tufts this afternoon.
