House Crews Row In First Practice

As spring arrived with soersucker costs, baseball teams, and daffodils, House crews floundered in the Charles last week in the season's first practices.

Although three weeks still remain before the first House race, Withrop's oarsmen, mostly recruits from Varsity cut lists, stand an favorites, although Kirkland may provide close competition if Tom Bolles, Varsity crew coach, dismisses his fourth boat, which is now staffed largely with Deacons.

Eliot House, point leader in the Straus Trophy contest, seems paradoxically uninterested in the river races, having organized no team or definite plans for one.

Leverett, the third crew so far to launch their craft on the choppy waters of the Charles, is inexperienced in comparison to the Puritans and Deacons, but may threaten the leaders by the season's end.

The remaining contenders, Dunster, Adams, and Dudley, should have their boatmen on the river within two or three days.
