Rallying behind the slogan "equal pay for male laborers," Union waiters are renewing agitation for a change in present work conditions, which they consider both unfair and demoralizing.
Similar action was undertaken by the group of 20 earlier in the year, but it collapsed in the face of official opposition.
The student food dispensers have two bones to pick with Union Dining Hall authorities. First, the matter of wages. The student waiters would prefer to receive the 65 cents plus free meals paid to outside help, rather than the present 75 cents an hour.
Although undergraduate waiters pay the regular basic board rate of $11.50 a week, they are occasionally deprived of full meals when a certain course is not ready by their required meal time.
Second complaint of the waiters is that, although their job is intended as a type of scholarship, they are treated as "help" by Union matrons. At times, they have been told that a certain desirable food which is in short supply is not to be eaten by "help." The waiters argue that they pay just, as much for the meal as every other Freshman.
