Defends Rally Hecklers

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

Just for the record: concerning the hecklers of the Wallace-sponsored anti-U.M.T. rally, I should like to point out that the CRIMSON'S "marketplace of political discussion" was hardly a discussion at all. In realty last Saturday at Sanders Theater a unilateral declaration was voiced over the objections of nearly half of those present. Although the tactics employed by that minority were hardly in line with our democratic ideals, it must be said that at no time, even through responsible representatives, were the very real arguments of the proponents of U.M.T. allowed. The effort was made to answer a direct question only to be stopped by the gendarmerie while the questioner was allowed to continue.

I will not argue the case for U.M.T. here, but it seems to me that the total disregard for the movements of the Politburo at last Saturday's meeting by most of the speakers showed all too clearly where their true sentiments lie.

In conclusion, it was Professor Sorokin's magnificent sincerity rather than the worth of his argument which quelled the opposition: Robert C. Cobb, Jr. '48
