Thrown out of the Dunster dining room Wednesday evening when their impromptu canvassing almost started a riot, two students came back last night to continue garnering signatures for Universal Military Training. This time they had official sanction, and gleaned 147 autographs from 350 House members.
Richard K. Russell '46 and Stuart P. Greene '48 spontaneously undertook the canvassing Wednesday, when they saw Wallace Committee members hawking anti-UMT petitions in the dining hall. Heated arguments arose between the two factions, until Senior Tutor Robert W. Rogers finally asked Russell and Greene to leave.
The petitions circulated with House approval last night were addressed to Senator Chandler Gurney, head of the Armed Forces Committee. Greene pointed out that the Wallaceites had gained only 60 signatures against UMT.
"Harvard has a pretty bad name as far as patriotism goes," he said. "This petition will show the true College feeling as far as Universal Military Training is concerned."
