Increased subsistence for veterans attending school became a reality Saturday when President Truman signed the bill raising monthly benefits from $10 to $30 per man.
Unmarried students will get a pay boost of $10, increasing their allowance to $75 a month. Men with wives receive a $15 hike, while one or more children warrant a rise of $30.
The measure, which becomes effective April 1, is expected to cost Washington over $200 million annually. The bill had been tied up in the House until it passed two weeks ago by a 370 to 6 majority.
Still awaiting final action is a measure which would increase the check a man taking on-the-job training can receive from his employer while getting government allowances.
