'52 Basketball Squad Downs Bruins, 46-40

Lloyd Harper's freshman basketball squad opened its season with a 46 to 40 victory over the Brown Cubs at Providence Saturday night after only one week of practice.

The first quarter resolved into nothing more than a foul shooting contest with neither side getting the edge, and the half ended in a 20 to 20 tie. The game held true to early-season form all the way, with Brown committing 26 personal fouls and the Crimson 21.

Coach Harper said he was particularly pleased with the work of forward Bill Hickey and guard Bill Borah. Hickey, basketball captain at Exeter last year, scored only seven points, but his competent ball-handling was a steadying influence on the team. The only man on the squad to play the full 40 minutes, Hickey managed to control the backboards despite his height of only 5 feet 7 inches. Jerry Murphy was the high scorer with 15 points. Ray Savoc was only one point behind to lead the Bruins' attack. Lanky Crimson center Jim Stevenson contributed ten tallies for the visitors.

Harper commented that "the boys looked a lot better than I expected for only one week of practice."
