College May Split Grant with State

Mabel S. Greer's contested $500,000 bequest to Harvard will probably be divided between the University and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, according to Henry A Wood Jr. deputy Treasurer of the College.

A New York Appellate Court ruled Monday that Mrs. Greer's illegitimate son was legally entitled to at least one half of her fortune, but Willard B. Segur Jr., the man who would have received it, died in a Boston hospital a year ago. This transfers his share of the fortune to the Commonwealth, which has acted as his estate in the controversy, and will probably claim and keep his share of the money. The case probably will be decided later this month.

Mrs. Greer socialite widow of a utilities executive died in August, 1946, willing $100,000 to the Pack Medical Group at Harvard $20,000 to relatives and servants, and the residuary estate to Harvard College.
